About The Book

East Germany and the Escape: Kitchen Table Memoirs

~ Doris Kienitz

My new book has been released! True tales of one man's struggle and determination; risking his life helping family and friends escape East Germany before the wall was erected. One man's dream to flee to Canada!

I am excited to announce that my first book, a biography, ‘EAST GERMANY and the ESCAPE: KITCHEN TABLE MEMOIRS’ has been published. The true story of Alfred Kienitz (b. 1930) set in East Germany – before, during and after WW2 – tells of many adventures and hardships suffered during those times.

Numerous chapters involve Alfred as a teenager on many of his escapades. Once married, he had no choice but to play the role of ‘police helper’ for the authorities – while at the same time risking his life by secretly assisting family, friends and even strangers to escape the clutches of Communism. After he aided his parents and brother escape into West Berlin, he and his wife, Margot, set their own plan in motion.

East Germany and the Escape: Kitchen Table Memoirs was released November 1, 2011 and is written by Doris Kienitz (daughter of Alfred).

My first six years were spent in Toronto, later moving to Hagersville, which I thought was way out in the boonies. I didn’t know what the boonies were till we moved to Cheapside!

I’ve always had an interest in writing and wrote many songs in my teenage years as a release. A rock star is what I aspired to be…to drive to California and sing as a career. My mother was appalled! Now I’m content to sing or chant during yoga practice.

My life has been no bed of roses (nearly losing my hand at fifteen, failed relationships, single mom trying to make ends meet, etc.) but it sure has been more of a picnic compared to what dad went through. It is through these adversities that we become stronger, develop character and appreciate what is good in our lives. Of course, it can turn us sour too! But if we want to succeed, if we want to be happy, we focus on the positive. We look for those positive role models, for those with smiling faces and seek to find their answers to happiness. It’s sometimes hard to hear people gripe when they are faced with some tough times. I feel like pronouncing, ‘look, I was a single mom on welfare, working three jobs! You think you had it tough…’ Well, someone always has it worse, and I know there are plenty out there who had a much rougher go of it than I.

One book that changed my way of thinking was ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’ by Norman Vincent Peale. One of my mentors, also an author (Autobiography of a Yogi) of several books is Paramahansa Yogananda who said ‘Let go and relax…when you are calm, you feel the whole universe of happiness rocking gently beneath your consciousness.’ In that calmness, in that relaxation mode when you can feel that you are one with nature and all of life, one knows and experiences a higher state of consciousness. It was in that state that the idea of writing a book came to me. And it is turning a dream into a reality. Any dream can be realized. All you need is to plant the seed and allow it to manifest.

Namaste!

With light and love,

Doris
